Why Your CV Is Being Rejected

Your CV may be only looked at for just 6 seconds.

First impressions always count, especially when it comes to a job application.

Recruiters receive thousands of CVs; many candidates receive nothing more than an automated email informing them they have not been selected for an interview.

But if I’m honest, CV rejection often occurs much more quickly than this (like within 2 seconds)

And it’s not because they are evil or don’t want you specifically for this job. It’s because certain things give an immediate wrong impression when you’re looking through hundreds of CVs.

But what makes you unique?

Here you will know some tips about why your CV may get rejected:

1- Meaningless Introductions:

Showing a cliché introduction, in summary, can lead to a turn-off. So, you’re a “hard-working,” “detail-orientated,” “team player” with a “strong work ethic” who is looking for a “new challenge.”

A snappy (and bespoke!) introduction should mention the industries and roles you have excelled in and what skills you would bring to your potential new job.

2- Spelling& Grammar:  

‘’Only one mistake and your CV gets chucked.’’

Try and remember that this is a document that represents you, and mistakes will reflect incredibly badly.

3- Don't attach tons of Certificates, only if required.

4- Long Paragraphs:

It’s important NOT to waffle on with long, drawn-out paragraphs. Put yourself in the shoes of the recruiter. They just need to see some simple keywords that deliver the message of what they really do.

It just needs to be easy for the reader.

5- Never add too many companies in the same email. It could be treated as spam.

6- Too Much information or Lies:

Including too much pointless information not important to the job you are applying for is a waste of space and could harm the chances of your next Job.

And remember, you don’t have to lie to get a job; you may get caught out and never be able to reach the company again.

7- Always send your CV in English; you may send it in other languages upon request only.

8- A CV of 20 pages is too much. A maximum of three pages or less is preferred.

9- Standard CVs are always the best. Too many colors, borders, images, and logos, are frustrating

10- Review the email carefully; avoid grammatical, spelling, or punctuation mistakes.

11- Lack of Covering Letter:

It can be a key to be in an interview or not. A well-written cover letter will spark an employer’s interest and immediately make them more eager to read your CV.

You want to keep it punchy, listing your strengths and showing exactly why you would be the perfect fit for the organization you are applying to.
